Swimming Safety Guidelines

At Pikes Swimming Club, safety is our top priority. Please review these guidelines carefully to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

For Parents & Guardians

  • Active Supervision: Always actively supervise your children in and around water, even if lifeguards are present. Avoid distractions like mobile phones. For young children and non-swimmers, this means "touch supervision" – being within arm's reach.
  • Teach Permission: Teach children to always ask permission before going near or into the water.
  • Swimming Lessons: Enroll children in age-appropriate swimming lessons. Pikes SC offers programs for various skill levels.
  • Know the Environment: Be aware of the pool layout, water depth, and any specific pool rules.
  • Life Jackets: Ensure young or inexperienced swimmers wear properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jackets when appropriate, especially in open water (though this is less relevant for our club pool).
  • Learn CPR: Parents and caregivers should consider learning CPR and basic water rescue skills.
  • Communicate: Inform instructors or lifeguards of any medical conditions or special needs your child may have.
  • Hydration & Sun Safety: Ensure children stay hydrated and use sunscreen if swimming outdoors (not applicable for indoor pools unless there's sun exposure).

For Swimmers (All Ages)

  • Never Swim Alone: Always swim with a buddy or under supervision.
  • Ask Permission: If you are a child, always ask a trusted adult before entering the water.
  • Walk, Don't Run: Pool decks can be slippery. Always walk to prevent falls.
  • Know Your Limits: Don't swim further or deeper than you are comfortable with. Start in shallower areas if you are unsure.
  • No Diving in Shallow Water: Only dive in designated areas where the water is deep enough and it's permitted. Check depth markers.
  • Listen to Instructors & Lifeguards: Always follow their instructions and pool rules. They are there for your safety.
  • No Rough Play: Avoid pushing, dunking, or other horseplay that could lead to accidents.
  • Stay Away from Drains: Pool drains and suction fittings can be dangerous. Do not play near them or sit on them.
  • If in Trouble: Stay calm. Try to float on your back and wave an arm or call for help.
  • Proper Equipment: Use appropriate swimwear. Goggles are recommended. Long hair should be tied back or a swim cap used.
  • Report Concerns: If you see something unsafe or someone in trouble, tell an instructor, lifeguard, or trusted adult immediately.

These guidelines are for your safety and the safety of others. By following them, we can all enjoy the benefits of swimming in a secure environment.
